Kylian Mbappe to be unveiled by Real Madrid this week and receive a signing bonus

Kylian Mbappe is expected to be announced by Real Madrid this week, with a signing-on bonus of over £85 million (€100 million). The 25-year-old, who scored 256 goals in 308 appearances for PSG, is set to sign a five-year contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, worth £12.8 million (€15 million) a year after tax.

Real Madrid has long been admirers of Mbappe, having attempted to sign him in 2022. However, the French forward committed to a new two-year deal at the Parc des Princes, which has now expired. Mbappe refused to activate a one-year extension in his PSG contract, allowing him to move for free, six years after costing the French club a significant fee.

The World Cup winner has taken a pay cut to move to Real Madrid. While he was earning €75 million (£63.9 million) gross in the final year of his PSG contract, plus a €30 million-a-year (£25.6 million) signing-on bonus, his departure has freed up at least €220 million (£187.5 million) in gross costs for PSG.

In Spain, the move is seen as inevitable. "There's a collective sigh of relief that it's finally over," one observer noted. "Everyone knew it was just a matter of when Mbappe would join Real Madrid. Real Madrid have been trying for years, even inviting him for a trial with their Under-12s side when he was 11. Although it didn't work out then, and PSG hijacked the deal in 2017, this time it really is happening."

However, there's some apprehension due to the disappointment of 2022 when Mbappe decided to stay in Paris, leaving many Real Madrid fans and club members feeling broken-hearted and angry.

Regarding how Mbappe will fit into the Real Madrid team, it will depend on Carlo Ancelotti's tactical decisions. If Ancelotti sticks with a 4-4-2 formation with Jude Bellingham at the top of the midfield diamond, Mbappe and Vinicius could start in a two-pronged attack. Vinicius has excelled on the left side, while Rodrygo offers tactical flexibility. Alternatively, a 4-3-3 formation with Mbappe in the center and Vinicius and Rodrygo on the wings is possible, though it would mean sacrificing a midfielder, an area where Real Madrid is particularly strong.
